The All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ) issued a fatwa against actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Wednesday, urging Muslims to disassociate from him. The fatwa follows controversy surrounding an Iftar party hosted by Vijay during the Vijay Ramzan event, which critics say was marred by the presence of gamblers and alcohol consumers.
AIMJ president Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi explained that the fatwa was issued due to Vijay’s portrayal of Muslims negatively in his films, as well as his controversial guest list at the Iftar gathering. Razvi accused the actor of using his political platform to gain favor with Muslims, while consistently misrepresenting the community in films such as ‘Kathi’ and ‘Beast,’ where Muslims were depicted as terrorists.
“Vijay has maintained cordial relations with Muslims but has also portrayed them in a poor light, which is why the community in Tamil Nadu is upset,” Razvi said. He further added that inviting individuals involved in gambling and alcohol consumption to the Vijay Ramzan event was disrespectful to Islamic practices.

The fatwa comes a month after a separate controversy where rivals of the TVK party alleged that Vijay sought Y-security from the Centre, fearing threats from Muslims. VCK spokesman Vanniarasu claimed that Vijay's actions in films like 'Kathi' and 'Beast' led to fears of backlash, prompting the actor to seek protection.
However, the TVK and its ally, the Tamil Nadu Muslim League, have denied the allegations, calling them a political strategy by the DMK to isolate TVK from Muslims.
The fatwa has sparked a wider debate, with some defending Vijay’s attempts to engage with the Muslim community, while others support the AIMJ's stance.
