Liverpool manager Arne Slot celebrated his team’s emphatic progression to the Carabao Cup final but emphasized that the true reward lies in winning trophies.
The Reds overturned a first-leg deficit with a dominant 4-0 victory over Tottenham in the semi-final, securing a showdown with Newcastle at Wembley on March 16. Having lifted the trophy last season under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool now have the chance to retain their crown.
Slot, in his debut season in English football after moving from Feyenoord, will experience Wembley for the first time. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he acknowledged the iconic status of the stadium, referencing Barcelona’s 1992 European Cup triumph under Johan Cruyff.
"As Dutch people, we all know how special Wembley was for Ronald Koeman and Barcelona," Slot said. "It’s an incredible venue, but it only becomes truly special if you win."
Despite Newcastle’s formidable challenge, Slot remains focused on his team’s progress. He previously guided Feyenoord to Dutch Cup success and understands the significance of winning finals.
"Our goal is always to improve and compete for titles," he stated. "Reaching finals is an achievement, but winning them is what truly matters."
Slot's Best Night Yet in Charge
Slot described the victory over Tottenham as his best night as Liverpool manager so far. His tenure has been remarkable, with 29 wins from 37 matches and only three losses.
"We’ve had big nights already, but reaching a final is always special," he said. "In that sense, this has been the most significant night so far."
Carabao Cup: A Stepping Stone to Glory?
With Liverpool leading the Premier League and competing in the Champions League last 16, Slot hopes domestic cup success will fuel their momentum.
Historically, the League Cup has paved the way for greater triumphs. Managers like Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, and Pep Guardiola all secured it before lifting the Premier League title.
Chelsea’s 2005 League Cup win under Mourinho was a turning point, with captain John Terry recalling how it built the team’s hunger for more silverware. Mourinho himself once remarked that taking the competition seriously was key to success.
A Historic Season in the Making?
Liverpool remain contenders for an unprecedented quadruple, with pundits hailing their potential.
"This could be a truly special season," said club legend Jamie Carragher. "They’ve been in this position before but missed out on the biggest prizes. The focus must be on the Premier League and Champions League."
Former midfielder Jamie Redknapp added: "Liverpool are arguably the best team in the world right now. Slot has done an outstanding job. The opportunity to win four trophies is there—this could be historic."
