Australian hockey player Tom Craig has been handed a 12-month suspension after his arrest for attempting to purchase cocaine during the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Craig, 29, will serve half of the suspension immediately, with the remaining six months suspended under specific conduct and behavioral conditions. The ban, which began on September 9, means he will miss the 2024 season but will be eligible for selection for the 2025 national team.

After being detained by French police for alleged drug involvement following Australia’s quarter-final loss in Paris, Craig was released without charges but received a judicial warning.

Hockey Australia confirmed that Craig must complete mandatory training and education programs as part of his penalty. The organization emphasized that Craig will continue to have access to athlete support services during his suspension, underscoring their commitment to his well-being.

Craig has publicly acknowledged his "terrible mistake" and apologized to his family, friends, teammates, and the Australian Olympic team.

Australia’s chef de mission, Anna Meares, described Craig as "a good person who made a bad decision." With over 100 caps for Australia and a silver medal from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Craig’s return to the sport will be anticipated in 2025.
